The Syrian Civil War has produced some of the most documented war crimes of the 21st century. The Assad government deployed chemical weapons against civilians, barrel-bombed hospitals and markets, and ran a systematic torture-to-death program in its prisons โ while ISIS committed genocide against Yazidis, staged mass beheadings, and weaponized sexual slavery. The UN Commission of Inquiry has documented thousands of individual incidents; full accountability remains blocked by Russian and Chinese Security Council vetoes. The fall of the Assad regime in December 2024 did not end atrocity in Syria. The opening of Saydnaya prison exposed the full scale of the disappearances โ tens of thousands of detainees, the 53,275 photographs smuggled out by the defector Caesar finally matched to names. But the transition produced its own: the March 2025 coastal massacres of Alawite civilians, found by a UN commission to be widespread and systematic, and the July 2025 summary executions in Suwayda. Accountability for both the old regime and the new government's militias remains largely unrealized.
